A short story about leather
Newport uses only high-quality and durable leather. Here are a few tips for caring for smooth leather (pull-up) and suede leather (Nubuck, Crazy Horse and suede) to help you get as much enjoyment out of our Newport shoes as possible:
Pull-up leather
Pull-up leather is cowhide leather which takes its special characteristics from a unique way of processing. It is very oily, extremely robust and resistant to salt water. In short: The leather is very durable and suited to daily use in the most demanding situations.
Cleaning pull-up / smooth leather
Polish individual, slight signs of wear with a cloth lightly greased with dubbin.
Nubuck leather
Nubuck leathers are stable, calf or cowhide leathers with a velvety surface which have been rubbed on the grainy side. This characteristic surface is created by roughening the smooth surface of the leather with an abrading medium. This makes the leather soft to the touch and increases its breathability.
Crazy Horse leather
Crazy Horse leather is an evolution of Nubuck leather. It is treated with plenty of oil, making it significantly more durable than Nubuck leather. The additional oiling makes the leather resistant to salt water.
Suede leather
Suede leather has a roughened surface texture and is soft and warm to the touch. These characteristics are created by the special treatment of the leather. Suede is another name for velour leather.
Cleaning and care of suede leather
It should be cared for with a leather sanding pad or a nubuck eraser. Follow-up treatment should take place no later than one year afterwards and then more frequently. Wet wipes are not very effective with suede leathers. They make the leather wet, do not clean very well and may leave watermark edges.
